The lakes within the valley provide warm summer air masses and frigid winters, which allow for producing the finest wines including late harvest and icewines.
The Okanagan is the oldest and main grape growing region in BC. Not only does the grape growing climate vary from one of the region to the other, but also the styles of the winemakers are also quite different. Due to the nationalities of the winemakers coming from around the world whose styles pay tribute to the wines of the their origin; including France, Germany, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, New Zealand, South Africa and more. When taking your wine tour you will notice that due to a warmer climate, harvest in the south is about three weeks before it is in the north.
The varying climate also determines what wine varietals are produced. If the timing of your visit is just right ensure that you watch the crush at a winery, a fun way to see how wine really gets started.
